Good morning everyone! Awhile back (I can’t remember what post I mentioned it in) I said I was writing this story for CPC, (hosted by Carol) and I would share it with you!
I really enjoyed writing this story, it was pretty fun, and I hope you enjoy reading it!
Also, I don’t really have a name for this story, so if you have any ideas, comment below!
My go to fact when someone asks me to tell them something I don’t know is this. “I live at the library.”
Well I guess, technically, I don’t actually live there. But I do work there. And my Mom and works there and my Dad works there.
My parents own this place. Lucky for me, I enjoy reading. Actually, I love it. I’m a bookworm.
A door burst open and then slammed shut again.
My friend, Micah made his way over to my table and pulled out a chair.
I looked up at him just as he was sitting down.
“Make yourself at home!” I invited him mischievously.
“Surprise! I’m back from the dead! Isn’t that exciting?” Micah looked at me expectantly and I returned that look with a confused one.
“What do you mean?”
“What do you mean, what do I mean?” Micah looked like he was just getting himself confused. “Ohhh… you mean why did I say ‘Surprise! I’m back from the dead! Isn’t that exciting?’ right?”
“Um, yeah! Correct!”
“Well what I meant to say is ‘Whoa. You’re alive? I thought you were dead!” he yanked on one of my brown curls.
“What?” I exclaimed.
“Obviously, you’re still confused,” he said, pretending to be smarter than he actually was. “Well that problem can be easily fixed. What I mean is, I haven’t see you in ages!”
“What?”
“Stop with your confusion, you know it’s true, I haven’t seen you in such a long time!”
“Okay,” I admitted. “Maybe that’s true.”
“You know it is.”
Micah pulled an algebra textbook from his backpack. Papers were sticking out from it in every direction… reminded me of myself when I wake up from a long night’s sleep. Let’s just say my hair isn’t neat all the time.
“Time to study!” Micah announced.
“You know…” I thoughtfully contemplated the idea forming in my mind. “You know how I could see you more often?”
“How?” Micah managed to mumble through a mouthful of sandwich.
I looked at him pointedly. “If you got a job here at the library, of course! My parents are looking for an extra hand. I’m sure they would take you on, they know you and trust you!”
“That wouldn’t be a bad idea… if…” he trailed off.
“If…”
He still didn’t continue. “If what?” I prompted.
“Oh come on, Jess. You know I’m not a book person like you and your parents!” he sighed. “I don’t know if that would work for me. It would be more fun if I liked books.”
“Two things. One, you don’t really have to be a book person in order to work at the library!”
“Says who?” he interrupted, grumpily while penciling in another problem on a sheet of algebra homework.
“Two,” I kept right on going, ignoring Micah, “is that you can always change that! I bet you haven’t even read a whole book in your entire life!”
“That’s not true!” he mumbled. “I have to read books for school all the time. “Besides. The only reason I don’t read as often as you is because I’m not that good at it.”
“Yes you are!” I contradicted. “and I’m going to talk to my parents about it! Don’t worry, you’ll love it!” and I scampered off.
Several months later…
I stood next to Micah helping him shelve books in the Young Adults section.
He fingered a book and I slid it onto the shelf for him.
“Oh come on!” he complained, “doesn’t it look like such a good book? I’ll have to come back for it after we’re done working.”
I laughed.
“See! I told you I could turn you into a book person!”
Thanks for reading!
